The Zolani Care Trust

PLANS

Projects will always move in cycles from moments of almost despair to moments of sweet success. The key to sustaining projects is good management. Provided the Trust maintains its current oversight whilst giving individuals ample scope to develop then there is no need for concern. Each project is autonomous having to maintain its own accounts which are vetted by the Trust. Projects can only work with money either provided by the Trust or their own revenues. No single project is allowed to financially threaten other projects or the Trust.

In liaison with a Dutch Housing Company plans are in hand to provide buildings at the Zolani Mission site. The most pressing need is space for a Skills Development Centre. Initially this will incorporate Zolani Wood. The purpose is to offer practical training in various artisan trades. We would like to use men and women so trained to form a company to offer housing repair services in Zolani.

The next priority is a general use area. This will be used in the mornings as an extra classroom for the rising 5's. In the afternoons as a craft training for the sowing, leather, weaving, glass and beadwork which are either in hand or able to start very quickly. With the training received whilst building these two rooms we shall build an additional classroom.

Funds permitting we would love to build a bakery and kitchen.

Our plan is to build an orphanage not as an institution but under parental care.

The land adjoining the church ( 2500 sq mt ) has been purchased from the Municipality. It was a long process with many delays but the whole process is now going through and the land should be in the Church's name by October. Building plans have already been submitted and rezoning applied for. We expect to lay the foundations by January perhaps earlier. Then a building team is coming out from Holland to build the centre third of the building. This is really wonderful but even more is the intimation from the donor company that they would like to fund the balance of the building. This would enable us to complete the whole building locally by mid 2009. They do not have enough funds yet but are trying hard to raise the money.

This will be an amazingly visible structure in the township. The church members have difficulty understanding what we are trying to do for them. They hear so many promises that are never fulfilled. It will be very interesting to see their reaction as the nursery, gardens and building begin to take shape over the next 6 months.

It is anticipated that the kitchen and bakery may open opportunities to provide food for HIV and TB sufferers. Perhaps through these doors we will become more engaged with these problems. For the moment it is beyond the capability of the people to respond to those needs effectively.

We have looked at how we can help people obtain the proper grants for children, electricity compensation and the like. We are in discussion with council on these matters and are seeking training and being appointed to liase with Social Affairs on behalf of Zolani people.
